What's your programming language? I'm learning Python but still I'm coonfused of switching to many languages. Fortran looks good, even Julia, R, and C++. But Python has numpy (2000 pages PDF e-book) and Matplotlib (also 2000+ pages and some has 3D samples that I'm still far away from learning, I'm young). Any advice guys?

Python is quick to learn. If you're a person in the scientific community you're not gonna make it to low level unless your field is Physics(electricity knowledgeable) or Electronics Engineering related.

C++ is hybrid. Both high-level and low level. I have better grasp with this language than Python. But it will take you ages to finish this language, and you will have to learn C also since it's "C with Classes". And for scientific computing, C++ has Boost::ublas or Eigen for linear algebra, and C libraries for floating point precision, and multi-threading support using <thread> or from Boost(external library).

I use python day-to-day because that's what most of the people in my lab understand (and even then, barely). However, my own projects are all a combination of C and Fortran. Why? Parallelism. MPI and OpenMP are pretty nice to use.

Python and Go are my main two. Python is faster to write, but Go is better when you're writing code that takes longer to run, since it runs faster and you have the benefit of a compiler preventing you from mistakes that would cause runtime errors in Python.

I'd like to add pure C to my repertoire as well, but haven't written any projects in C yet.

This is my unfinished project in my string library in C so far. While I'm still stuck I'm doing scripts on Java which is already a built system and Python (for numpy).

I like C++, python is great for data, but JavaScript is the best.
It's the best because any browser will run your program. As a beginner this is priceless: your program actually works on any device, anywhere. You don't have to worry about anything. Just write your program in JS, and write a html file and a css file, and publish it on github. To publish easily to github with gitbash you need to get an ssh key and learn literally 4 commands. It's so straightforward compared to any other language, unless you are happy to make only jupiter notebooks or excel spreadsheets with vba. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

To be clear, yes its easier to just write a c++ program or python program that with run in the environment you wrote it, but to get that program to work on a y other device it a whole can of worms as far as I can tell.

Doesn't it depend on what you want to do?

C or Python is a good language if you just want to get started with "coding". But what really matters is what you are doing. Python is generally used in backend development, or for database analytics and stuff like that, and actually it's the frameworks like Django or Flask that matter.

Javascript is really good one because with it you can ship complete (frontend and backend) projects by using React and Node.js , for Android development you would want to learn Java or kotlin, and for ios development Objective C or swift.

It is good to be know quite a number of languages and have some projects to show for, this goods look on the resume because it shows that you are willing to learn new stuff, in a lot of tech companies, you will have to learn new frameworks or even some obscure not popular languages.

keep your language and build things. Learning syntax is easy building stuff is a lot harder. SA will get your a lot more jobs. Maybe use wgpu-py or opengl if you want to do learn about graphics. No one reads the complete numpy book you just pick and choose what you need.
I would recommend writing some fluid simulations those always looks cool. Or copy marble marcher in python.

high level: you focus on numbers, graphics, and external libraries, Physics, Mathematics, etc

low level: C or Assembly, it's building things for top and use it on top, but Python is already complete for everything you need. You just browse modules and type pip install module name on the terminal and it's ready to use. It's 2021. Characters have already been drawn by Bill Gates so why have to redraw it? that's why there's iostream already and an [x] button and a window button when you start coding. But low-level is your job of course discard Physics and Mathematics.

It doesn’t mater. Pick a (first) language, and stick to it until you can use it fluently. Every application domain has its own library/libraries and they are written in different languages. You’ll be able to pick them up easily after you know how to learn a new language.

Using any other programming language can have its reasons, but generally you want to use python if you aren’t absolutely proficient with other languages already. If you aren’t that good and use c++ for something complex, chances are you will be debugging more than doing actual scientific work. Don’t waste your time on this topic, use the right tools.

go seems pretty nice, but the problem in science is less about how good a language is and more about how many people you know actually use it. i have declined a collaboration because the other guy insisted on using javascript for some reason. likewise, i have had had literal screaming matches with academics in my lab because they wanted to use python or matlab for a project where i KNEW C would be more practical.

What I recommend everyone knows is the following:
Matlab, Python, and VBA.

Every other language is pretty situational imo. The reason for this is you want to maximize the languages you know that others around you know. Matlab (and it's open source offshoots) is extensively used by engineers and government. Python is pushed and used by everyone and their mother. VBA is the boomer core language and you will have to use because you will inevitably have to get gud at Excel.

For your first language, since you're already learning python, I recommend sticking with it. Become highly proficient, learn good coding practices with it, etc. Your first language you should stick with for multiple years (in undergrad all I ever used was C++ since that was my first language) and only dabble in others.

This is just normal organizational inefficiency and I can see why it happens. I'm guilty of it as well. I pushed a mandate that everyone knew one and the same language in our division (MATLAB or it's derivatives) because everyone we collaborate with uses it. It takes people FOREVER to translate their disgusting code from one language to another. It's better if there is just standardization.

Java is meant for everything not directly hardware related. COMSOL Multiphysics 5.x had 3 export options. Java, Matlab and Visual Basic. Guess which one Comsol is written?

Python is a great language to start with. If you need more later, it's quick to learn new languages once you've learnt how to program. My second language, Julia took me ~2-3 weeks to learn. My third language, Java took me 2-3 days. And i learnt the basics of C in an afternoon as my third language. In other words; you are in no way locked to using python if you start learning programming via python.

I've given up. There's maybe 3-4 usable (in terms of the language design) programming languages in existence, and nobody uses them, making them practically useless. Programming is conclusively for sub-130-IQ NPCs. If you've used any of the top 10 programming languages and came to a different conclusion, you are a sub-130-IQ NPC, and you, personally, are the reason for garbage-tier nuclear sewage software we're all stuck with.
