Video Games as Brain Training

What does /sci/ think about video games as brain training? I've seen a number of articles claiming that video games make you smarter or at least keep your mind sharp. Here is one study:

If one isn't otherwise inclined to play video games, is it worth playing them for these supposed benefits? Or would brain training apps like Lumosity, or programs like Dual-N-Back, work just as well?
And as far as that goes, what does /sci/ think about brain training generally? Does the average brainlet trying to stay sharp and perhaps slightly increase cognitive ability really get any benefit from it?
