>high school student, really good at math and science
>get told by literally everyone that I should go to university to become an engineer/scientist etc.

>leave uni, kind of upset that I don't really feel like I KNOW anything, everything taught was all theory and basically for any job that I get (and that I did get, for what it's worth) I'm basically learning everything on the job from scratch.
>suddenly everyone starts gaslighting me when I complain about this
>"university isn't a job program, it's to teach you how to THINK"
>"the point of university is to MAKE CONNECTIONS"
>"yeah you don't really learn anything particularly useful in university, but you LEARN HOW TO LEARN"
>"actually university is literally just a 4-year time waster in order to get a piece of paper that proves you're (a) intelligent, (b) capable of working hard, and (c) capable of learning"
>"your formal education doesn't really mean that much, what employers want to see is PROJECTS"
etc., things of that nature.
