How does computational chemistry play a role in this field? I heard lots of genetic engineering is basically a sequence of steps involving small molecules, most of which need to be optimized more.

you mean designing synthesis pathways?
genetic editing itself doesn't really involve small molecules, restriction enzymes or CRISPR are used nowadays.

Anyways where’s the “engineering” here? Engineering implies some sort of rational design, driven by predictive science of some kind.

Gene therapies i'm not sure about, but then again its just a name.

And if you start being pedantic like that, not every edit in the genome involves a gene.

Eh, he ain't Dr. John Zhang, George Church or Stephen Hsu. He is mostly a glory hound that harmed the work towards human genetic engineering. We lack the data to give a qualitative estimation of his work but He probably based his work on studies on CCR5 in 2016.
I'm not surprised that that someone would try to get the fame but He shouldn't have been that sloppy and wait atleast 5 years for the technology to mature.
