If i had to guess it would be the result of economical and technological advancement of society that has made life easy and without worry. Just 50 years ago people were expected to be more aware of their responsibilities to society, they had to get a job at an early age, raise a family and take care of themselves. Today we live in such an abundance that our needs have been taken care of without us having to take responsibility. That together with a deluge of easy access entertainment have stunted our emotional growth as human. But i'm just guessing, nobody knows.
