I'm trying to set up a home microbiology lab but I'm worried it's illegal. Does anyone here have any expertise on this subject?

What's your set up? I'm considering doing this myself. Micro incinerators are stupidly pricy for something that can be replaced by a strong flame. Also, iirc you can use a pressure cooker as an autoclave.

Really if there was someone I could call up and ask if they needed lab help I'm all ears but to my knowledge no one wants anything less than a PhD student doing their own research in the modern college laboratory setting. Nothing I'm thinking of culturing should be dangerous unless a truly idiotic event like ingesting an undiluted suspension of soil microbes happened.

I might attempt to do this as well, but I've got to see what setup requirements are necessary. I'm more interested in anaerobic bacteria though, or ones that are salt tolerant.

You can find cheap 2nd hand equipment if you know where to look in telegram for less than $1000 provided you do the pickup.
You can even find some cheap reagents and high fidelity enzymes synthesized in home labs if you are in the know.

For liquid cultures, you'll need Balch tubes. Agar plates will need a gas-pak. Even better, save your money and go work in a real lab.

good luck. if you have to ask this question you’re gonna infect yourself with a nasty strain. almost all bacteria are harmful in large quantities and a microbiology lab pretty much only accumulates large quantities of bacteria. also the stink is unbelievable, and you can’t safely get rid of your waste. do yourself a favor and find a less smelly hobby

BSL-1 is common for high-schools and colleges and extremely cheap to set up. The only things you need for BSL-1 are a locked door, sharps disposal, spill kit, and an autoclave. Autoclaved waste can be thrown in local trash, but local laws may vary. Biofriends informed me most supplies can be bought for home use, YMMV.

I said it was a waste of money, not a biosafety concern. I don't give a shit if OP fumigates himself. Also, sourcing shitty 3rd hand centrifuges and incubators isn't the barrier to entry for l33t biohaxor LARPing. It's sourcing reagents and media. Go try and buy phenol or plasmids from Sigma-Aldritch. It's not going to happen unless you're a registered commercial or academic entity. If you want to jump through those hoops and then spend your neetbux on reagents that you won't be able to afford anyway, knock yourself out. The culture media that we use for anaerobic bugs is about $500 a batch. I know this DIY mol bio is a load of shit, because I ran the budget 12 years ago when I was a naive undergrad.

My man I am literally a molecular biologist, I have a degree. I'm not trying to LARP as a biohacker I want to grow cool cultures for my microscope, look for strains that digest specific plastics from a junkyard, and make glow in the dark bacteria for fun. I think your budget calculations are kind of off, I've been able to get everything I need to do this for <$500 except for the reagent I'll need to test if plastic is being digested which will probably run me several hundred. I don't want to fuck up the insurance for my property however, so I'm asking if anyone knows the legal specifics for zoning.

It's not, people use home microbiology labs for mushroom cultivation all the time. You can make a laminar flow hood using a mycology design for 150-300$. A pressure cooker, aka a home autoclave, is also very easy to acquire.

Btw I have made dextrose agar plates at home to act as long-term storage backups for mushroom strains I bought online, if you are interested start by watching some vids from amateur mycologists who legitimately do a lot of this on a regular basis.
