first of all, fuck you. second of all, this question is stupid because ambiguous formatting is what produces the different answers.

I’m an regrettably an american but the way I was taught math (PEMDAS) gives 1 as the solution.
Parenthesis (1+2) = 3
Exponents (there are none)
Multiplication 2(3) = 6
Division 6 / 6 = 1
Addition and Subtraction are last, but the problem has already been solved.

That elementary-school division operator is poorly defined and therefore ambiguous. Some will interpret it as "divide everything on the left by everything on the right" while others will interpret it as "divide the term immediately to the left by the term immediately to the right". In other words, an expression might be considered nonsensical if it were to contain two of that particular division operator.

The answer is 9. PEMDAS is a shit acronym that leads people astray. It's Parentheses, then Exponents, then Multiplication AND Division, then Addition AND Subtraction. Multiplication and Division are the same order of operation because they are really the same thing. Division is just multiplying with fractions. So you just go left to right. In this equation you do the Division first because it's to the left of the Multiplication. Addition and Subtraction are the same order of operation because Subtraction is just adding negative numbers. But really this equation is just poorly written, probably to purposefully confuse people.

This one is easy! $2(1+2) = 2 + 4$ , so we get $6/(2(1+2)) = 6/(2 + 4) = \frac{6}{2} + \frac{6}{4} = \frac{12}{4} + \frac{6}{4} = \frac{18}{4} = \frac{9}{2}$ .

Python thinks it's 9. Looking back to how I would've solved this in elementary school, I'd get 9 (ex-USSR country). But now my first instinct would've been to put everything on the right in the divisor and everything to the left in the numerator, mainly because I haven't actually seen a division operator like that in ages, we stopped using it when we hit algebra in middle school.

The way I was taught math, division and multiplication had equal priority, same as with addition and subtraction. But this example shows that it actually does matter what order you do them in.

Since there aren't parentheses at that location you need to solve the division first.
PEMDAS also states that multiplication and division have an equal importance therefore we need to perform whichever one comes first first(the division).

The reason I emphasized Multiplication AND Division then Addition AND Subtraction is because many Americans are taught PEMDAS wrong. They're taught Multiplication THEN Division THEN Addition THEN Subtraction. Many Euros are getting this wrong as well, so no this isn't obvious asshole.
