A highly non-standard, but suprisingly non-retarded take on statistical physics was presented by E.T. Jaynes in the fifties. There is a nice collection of his papers with additional comments,

But as I said, it's not the canonical approach, and it might nottreat standard examples you'd find in other textbooks. It's a great read once you're through one of the standard textbooks.
