I am confused about something

I know that a pound is a unit of weight, so that’s the force of gravity an object feels, but I know a kilogram is a unit of mass

We measure the metric system with a scale just like the imperial system, so what makes pounds a weight and kilograms a mass?

Your talking about pound force (lbf), but the imperial units have pound mass (lbm) and slugs to actually measure mass.

The fact that none of this is true and it's just a retarded (((factoid))) midwits try to use to make metric sound more "scientific" compared to Imperial. A kilogram and pound that we measure with a scale are all units of force because we are measuring a weight. The reason this retarded factoid gets pushed around is because, on Earth's surface, a kilogram-mass of material will have a measured weight of 1 kg-force based on definition but the same cannot be said for a pound-mass of material.

N is weight

On the moon your gravity-caused N changes
but your kg stays the same.
Hammers work just as well on the moon as on earth.

On earth, since the gravity is constant, the distinction between mass and weight is not usually important.

On earth, something with a mass of 1 kilogram will weigh about 2.2 pounds. Something with a mass of 10 kilogram will weigh about 22 pounds. You could think of them as two units measuring the same "thing", just like feet and meters both measure distance.

However, if you bring that 1 kilogram object to the moon, that object will still have the same mass. It's still made out of the same amount of stuff. But it will feel lighter since the gravity is not a strong on the moon. That 1 kilogram object will only weigh about 0.366 pounds.

So weight and mass aren't quite the same thing, but in 99.9% of everyday use, they are interchangeable.

Also, "weight" is just the name we give to the downwards force caused by gravity. So units of weight are just units of force.

In the metric systems the unit of force is the newton and the unit of mass is the kilogram.
In the imperial system, if you need to distinguish between force and mass, I've seen lbf (f for force) and lbm (m for mass).

Prior to changes made in the 1950s in an effort to force the imperial system to be more like the metric system there was know lbm unit. We used pounds for force and in lieu of using slugs, we described mass in terms of its equivalent gravitational force.

Which, ironically, is more intuitive since force can be directly and intrinsically measured experimentally whereas mass is derived from measurements.

They can be numerically equal under certain conditions but they are strictly not the same thing

It's just a quirk of how old systems of measurements don't really catch up to new understandings in science. Before acceleration, and by extension gravity, were even concepts, there was no incentive to try and define "mass" as a different concept from "weight".
Now that gravity is a thing, US customary units have to create dumb workarounds, like having two versions of pounds (that being pound-mass and pound-weight) and also creating a completely different unit, the slug, for measuring masses while taking into account the acceleration due to gravity.
SI units had the opportunity of being new and being created long after Newton's explanation for gravity and created a system where "mass" and "weight" were different concepts.
