If you look at our current technological trajectory, you see that development of AI and related technologies is inevitable. Sooner or later, someone will create an AGI, or an AI so advanced that it will pose an existential risk to life on Earth. At this point, not only is human civilization at risk, but all life on Earth is at risk. Given the geopolitical and economic realities, people will continue to develop AI, and sooner or later this WILL occur.
The only way to stop this is to make such development impossible. How? If technology and society crumbles to a point where electricity stops being readily available, that will be enough. How do we accomplish that? Global warming. By raising the seas, by increasing famines, by leading to refugee crises, by causing the total collapse of the global supply chain for good, global warming will ensure that civilization will collapse, and thus that AI development stops.
So, we have a choice. Stop AGW and see the rise of AI and the extinction of all life on Earth, or to accelerate AGW, sacrifice human civilization, and save life. For me it's a no-brainer.
