Would something relying on the Earth's gravity count as a perpetual motion machine?
It seems that traditionally it would count, but nowadays "the Earth won't be around forever!"

a force is simply a type of interaction between objects. gravity is a form of energy transfer, but it is not energy itself.
whatever 'energy' you could 'extract' from gravity, is not coming from gravity at all. it is coming from the objects interacting, and those objects are subject to the same laws of thermodynamics as everything else

Friction absorbs energy, even if you were to have no friction you would still need to get rid of heat-to-energy conversion and the capability of materials to receive and give/irradiate heat which means that you would have perpetual energy that can't be transported which defeats the purpose of a machine as work wouldn't even exist.

For example, you lift a ball up, you give it "x" amount of energy. You drop the ball and it releases exactly "x" amount of energy as it bangs on the ground.
