Radiation decay

Especially beta decay.
I don't understand why it happens.
Why is there a Half-life? Why is the decay exponential? How does it ever makes sense?

Lets assume you have a block of carbon that beta decays into nitrogen.
How does it happen that some atoms decay and some don't? Why do some decay immidiatly and the other ones statistically never?
How do particles "know" that they need to decay? If you have only 2 atoms left, why does only one decay and the other doesn't? Is this some quantum mechanical mumbo jumbo? Is there some random element that makes no sense?
