What feels easier, carrying 10 kg over a distance of 100 meters, or carrying 100 kg over a distance of 10 meters? Both require the same amount of energy, but carrying 10 kg over 100 meters is easier.
In the lever example, you're using less force, but you're moving the object a greater distance.
You should really be asking why the force is smaller on the long side, because the energy is not force, and energy used is the same on both sides.
