PhD is just gatekept by incels and rich kids.
I have a life, no I am not going to slave away for less than mcdonalds pay. These losers have nothing going for them or are really angry they spent all their 20s in college, so they force that lifestyle on everyone.
Get a masters, pass prelims with a PhD pass, do some research, and its the same thing in all but name.
These same spergs get angry at the GRE, because their success is based on GPA(timesink banging head on a wall) rather than actual comprehension.

Usually you start the Ph.D and if things aren't working out you can leave with the masters (I did this).

A masters can be a good thing if you aren't as strong in undergrad and want to take some time to get better and develop a research portfolio before applying to a Ph.D

Yes, if you go to a decent program which cares about masters students you should have a solid year of research. I wrote a published paper about a problem in combinatorics during that time.

I went to an engineering PhD program in a large PNW university, half the Master's students were paying via research assistantship program. Just because it didn't happen for you doesn't mean it never happens.
