Lol you got me. I was larping. As a fresh PhD graduate I’m also wondering how academics cope. I don’t see why anyone would want to stay in academia. You have shit resources and your employees (students and postdocs) are super stressed with shit pay. You can’t ever hope to compete with industry.

It’s so much of a fucking joke that academics pride themselves in “hurrr durrr we got an industry collaboration! Someone finally find our work useful!” It’s such a fucking dichotomy.

I’m in computational physics so I see this a lot. We had our shitty academic supercomputers yet industry people have huge clusters of GPUs, and the national labs have the biggest computers on the planet. National labs are a cooler alternative (only in computational science, not space/hardware related stuff).

Anyways yeah it’s fucking over for academics. I’m also curious why the fuck anyone would want to stay, unless they’re a mathematician or something.

I have, it entails spending dozens of hours writing a paper that will only be read three times, some of which need fees of hundreds of dollars to be published, and then spending an equal amount of time to prepare a presentation for half a dozen bored scientists waiting to pick you apart in Q&A in some shitty hotel conference room in Scottsdale during your field's annual meeting
Meanwhile your friend that when into quantitative finance is vacationing in Hawaii and get paid $300 an hour + commission to go through less bullshit

I make bank in industry while writing highly cited arxiv papers in my spare time (computational work). Academics write poorly cited paid journal papers while making shit salaries - they don’t have the skills to make actual contributions (industry). They literally have to pay to get their work noticed. That’s the ultimate cope.
