So let's say we make spaceships, manage to colonize other planets, create space stations or whatever.

We could do it today if ethics committees agreed and someone like Bezos funded it to create a slav^s^s^smars adapted human subspecies with chimp bodies. then octopus based maintenance sentients for those abysses.
