they tried by making artificial languages like esperanto which was latin based which is what scientists did their language in during the renaissance. english is the organically grown colonial language and steals from other languages all the time

you can read about the entire thing in jewish writings, it was much worse than a single city

Although there are probably some lessons, the story is meant as an explanation of how it came to be that there are some many different languages across the world.
