/nmg/ - Numerical Mathematics General

No.13984900 ViewReplyOriginalReport
Hello, and welcome to a first edition of a hopefully successful general on numerical/computational mathematics, scientific computing and related topics.

>What are numerical mathematics?
Everything related to using, analyzing and studying algorithms which use some sort of numerical approximation method.

>Why is this useful/imporant?
Numerical mathematics are how you solve mathematical, scientific and engineering problems in the real world.

>Does [x] qualify as numerical mathematics?
Most likely it does, however in cases such as machine learning/ai, where there's a ton of overlap into other fields/disciplines, I feel like the discussion itt should focus on the mathematical aspects of it.

>Conversation suggestions for the thread:
>What are you currently using numerical mathematics for? What are you studying/working in?
>FEM or FVM, why?
>Whats your favorite programming language for scientific computing? Why?

I am making this thread as I am very passionate about this and I know a ton of anons here are into it too but it's never discussed. I think this can turn out to be a very comfy thread.
