>generally looked upon more favorably
A 3.7 from Stanford is better than a 4.0 from any state school (except Berkeley).
For finance, the top tier firms have established pipelines for the graduates from the top colleges. Their alumni networks are more than just a group you join on Facebook or LinkedIn. It's an actual network.

My uni was about as prestigious as my last shit, but after working as a software "engineer" for a few years I manged to transition into finance as a software engineer and then onto a trading desk. Most places ask for people from prestigious universities, but in 90% of cases you'll probably score an interview and that'll be a bigger decider than your immediate university experience. Unless, that is, you want to work as a quant.

No, you really don't. Quants are almost universally hated and looked down on. You know how in American high school films, you have the stereo typical jocks and nerds? Imagine that, but real. No one likes quants, and if you saw the work quants do you wouldn't want to be one.
