Why can we see other stars? Shouldn't they flicker? No, not atmospheric refraction. I mean given there average distance shouldn't that dissolve the probability of one proton even reaching us? Shouldn't they start to pop in and out of existence, visually?

really good point, thinking outside the box. yeah, it does seem completely ridiculous that they wouldn't flicker stronger and stronger the further they are away. just try and imagine how small of an arc/vector a single pixel on a lens/dish of an observatory is when you are looking at the most distant stars and then tell me that the idea of particles hitting that constantly without fault makes sense to you.
