Traditional European elite education focuses on old languages like Latin and Ancient Greek, reading the classics and rhetoric. That doesn't mean that they didn't learn calculus but an education that focuses on mere technical or scientific skills is more of a middle class thing.
That's why someone like Boris Johnson can somewhat fluently quote Homer and even speak Ancient Greek even though he probably didn't have to use anything above high school math since graduating from his elite private school.
And this idea of math and science being something that can be left to the lower classes with a need for gainful employment echoes to this day even though most walking stereotypes of the zero math skill and proud of it category don't have an upper class background.
