The truth is, if you're in ANY stem field you should know statistics and you should know statistics well. Not just meme through it either. So many people don't understand basic statistics that it's just sad.
I will say though, that just having statistics can be somewhat useless. You really need to pair it with a subject matter expertise imo.

I don't know where this meme of worshiping only pure mathematics came from, but I will tell you every great mathematician in history worked on thoroughly applied problems (in addition to pure work).
All the most fun work is applied as well since you can immediately see your work in use modeling something from real life. It's quite beautiful.
