We should really research animal self harm more, to try and build a basis for understanding on this.
Self surgery is a very interesting trait to consider from a natural selection standpoint.
Creatures that perform self surgery COULD extend their life and/or ability to mate.
However, creatures that attempt self surgery, and fuck up, will kill themselves.
Some Goldie Lock's middle ground on that may have contributed to intelligence.
Self surgery may have had a hand in leading to self awareness...
