Religious imagery on hallucinogenic drugs

No bullshit. WHY do people commonly see religious symbols when on seriously intense doses of psychedelics, or just on very powerful psychedelics period?

I am white, English, and non-theist. On DMT I frequently saw Hindu deity looking figures. I did not expect this and was not consciously willing this imagery into being. I have never seen religious images in dreams.

Can you propose a hypothesis for why out of all things it is possible to hallucinate, this specific type of imagery is so often reported? And what is the reason?

Yeah I have (rarely) seen depictions of Hindu deities. Along with merely deities, I also hallucinated a figure in prayer in Lotus position, and a statue of Buddha. Buddha is not even a deity and it was a statue rather than a person that I hallucinated.

I don't think it's as simple as it just being random human forms. But I'm very interested in what is going on behind the scenes where my brain is altered by a specific chemical, and for some reason it is spitting out a very specific type of imagery.

I did not expect it. When I used Salvia I had never read or seen a single trip video or read any trip report, I hallucinated "trains". I find out that is one of the most common archetypes.

On Benadryl people see spiders, and cigarettes on Datura.

With psychedelics, in high amounts people often see religious imagery, which does not at all necessarily reflect their culture or preconceived beliefs. There is of course a reason behind the scenes for why the brain is generating images from this specific subset of religious symbology.

Why?

I have often wondered at the specific fractals and vortices I see on lsd. I read somewhere that they may be what's under your normal filters, like the raw swirling chaos gears that compose the inner divine mechanism.

It isn't this simple. DMT is the active ingredient of Ayahuasca, I have used it many times. As a non-theist white English man, I largely hallucinated Hindu type imagery.

I have seen creatures too but unrecognizable from any prototypical representation of aliens or jaguars and such... A religious person could easily interpret these as demons or spirits, or an atheist as aliens.

I am interested in the why. Religious imagery and (not in my experience but for others) Aztec scrawling are very common on extreme breakthrough doses... The jesters and such are a common archetype on marginally lower amounts. When things really ramp up, it gets religious fast.
