I have a geology degree and I work in the environmental services department of a civil engineering company, I'm not rich but I make comfortably more than average income for my area and the work isn't very demanding.

Engineers are struggling for work more than accountants in my experience. There is no sane answer as to why an accountant should be considered more valuable to a society than an engineer.

The entire point of the STEM degree is either to contribute to the collective body of knowledge or to innovate practical products using said body of knowledge.
Only the top percentile of IQ has the capacity to do so.

This is right in spirit but too simple. There are a fuckload of very talented scientists now who can contribute quality research and it still won't be enough. Many get sick of getting paid like shit and want to be able to afford to own a place to live (I ended up in this position myself and so did another postdoc I know) but still, the industries have been absolutely decimated in the west, and there's fuck all places to go.

Okay, this sounds snarky but I'm genuinely asking. What makes one a 'talented' researcher, assuming they have or need the support of an institution. What admirable traits do they possess? The more I got to know my professors and worked in labs (at an R1), the less I respected them.
