Why hasn't some space program just made a better version of the hubble? Surely advances in light sensor technology and lens manufacturing would allow them to make a significantly better performing low earth orbit telescope, probably in a fairly low (for a space program) budget.
I understand that the James Webb telescope is for detecting infrared and serves a different purpose than the hubble but it seems like advanced hubble replacement would also be extremely valuable for research and astronomy.
