I'm not diabetic myself, but this is a very serious condition that makes one depend their whole life on artificially expensive medication. Has there been any news/breakthroughs in treating type 1 diabetes with gene therapy?

Maybe? I found the following article. It's not necessarily genetic, environment plays a role, but autoimmunity is still not very clear imo. The issue is that the cells can be replaced, but if the autoimmune response is ongoing, they'll simply be destroyed again.

In the majority of cases, the pancreatic beta cells which produce insulin have been obliterated. This is the etiology of disease. Introduction of a plasmid which transcribes insulin could theoretically work.

Also gene editing is a myth, your genetic code is put there at conception and you will never be able to change you xy chromosome into a xx

This overcomes the problem with transplanted islet cells. The "gene therapy" is that, in these new cells, the gene that produces the proteins that make insulin functional once again in the patient.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm very confident with these therapies a whole list of conditions are going to move from treatable to curable in the next 5-10 years. If anyone tells you mrna or gene therapy is bullshit, kick them in the nuts, hard.
