It's all about lack of alternatives. ISS has been funded for decades because there are no alternatives, and building a new, government station would be much more expensive. That's how we got to the point of CLD, and earlier, Commercial Crew.
NASA can still use the excuse that 'SLS is the only Moon rocket', but that's temporary. By choosing Starship for HLS, they made sure that SLS will be dead by the end of this decade. Just think about it, in a few years we will have a rocket that can do the same tasks as SLS, and more, for much lower price. It's just a matter of time before someone in the congress asks: "Hey, what's the point of Orion? It's awfully expensive. Can't you just launch people on Starship?".
Around 2025 NASA is going to have an alternative to the SLS.

Are chemical rockets the only feasible way to accomplish surface to orbit? Is there a more reliable, safer way? Excluding external power sources i.e. beam powered spacecraft.

I don't get this "fly around for two years, wave as you go by, don't even bother to stop" meme. This shit goes back to the 60s when we didn't have good enough computers and thought we had to have humans in space just to hold the camera.
There was a time when they even ejected film capsules to be caught in-air on the way down. MOL and such never happened once satellites could transmit images over radio. Humans are the worst things to schlep around in space if you're not going to stop and walk around.

So sn20 had its crane load bearings removed. I dont like the sound of this. It means they'll launch another suborbital or hypersonic from Starship on suborbital pad instead of on superheavy at orbital pad. Which means environmental delays for Starship.

Either that or they'll find another way to lift Starship from suborbital pad to superheavy OR they'll move sn21 on top of superheavy instead and let sn20 stay where it is. Either way, delays delays delays.

Helium-3 is just better for fusion. It's like comparing wood to gasoline, one is just much richer in energy.
Once fusion kicks off, the cheaper fusion reactors for smaller countries will use helium-3 do to lower operating/investment cost, and similar energy output per dollar.

For the foreseeable future, yes.
I don't know enough about orbital launch loops to say whether they'll get beaten by a highly optimized Starship like space elevators already do. But that's pretty much the only alternative way, barring some technologies that would be unlocked were some other theory like QI to turn out to be true.

Why did the government create the SLS/Orion programs in the first place? Because for the government to just give away taxpayer money for nothing in return would be unjustifiable to the electorate. Once equally capable yet vastly cheaper commercial alternatives exist and have proven themselves beyond any doubt, then the SLS and/or Orion programs will soon become unjustifiable to the electorate, so they must be canned and the government must invent some new pork barrel spending project to take its place.

I think it could go on for decades. The CPC has demonstrated they are committed to steadily steaming forward in space exploration. At the same time, the US' national self-image requires them to be number one. So the US will keep moving forward to stay ahead of the Chinese as they move forward. China says they will land peple on the Moon around 2030. So the US is paying SpaceX to land people on the Moon a few years before China. China says they will build a Moon base in the 2030s. So the US will pay SpaceX to build a Moon base a few years before China. Then just to drive home the point, NASA leverage the potential of Starship and pay SpaceX to land people on Mars. Then China will copy Starship and land people on Mars. In parallell they will be doing stuff that the other side hasn't and everything they have done, like ever more grandiose space stations and landing or Jupiters moons or whatever. No idea when one side will get sticker shock and end it.

the fact that he has to focus on the proton born concept, which is much harder to get going than the helium-3 concept and is clearly being discussed in the context of the engines of a very large advanced spacefraft rather thanb the d-he3 version that;s much smaller and easirer to create should tell you that he's just arguing in bad faith. There's not much point in talking about fusion rockets here until we have that shit working properly, but given work at PPPL on the DFD drive making steady progress and work by pulsar fusion and zap energy on aspects of it I think it will start to be a real topic sooner thna most think.

There really isn't a point in going that deep into the gravity well, no. Other than "we did it because we could". But unlike going to the Moon or Mars there is no science that would be done that a probe couldn't do just as well. You would need to airlaunch out of there as well, which would be difficult as only a few companies are exploring that tech tree right now and it still isn't that reliable—especially with humans aboard.
And yeah I doubt they are still planning it but China wanted to do a preliminary study on a manned Venus flyby a few years ago because they knew the US had already been to the Moon and the US would reach Mars before them as well

They don't. This comparison is hilarious. We've been building habitable cans for the vacuum of space for ages, a flyby is just a question of launching one on the right trajectory. Whereas building and delivering something as finicky as an atmospheric base for an environment as inherently hostile as Venus is a massive, entirely unprecedented undertaking.

The advantage is being able to use the second stage engines to reduce the dry mass of the first stage.
Tile strikes are an easy fix: just face the re-entry side of the second stage away from the booster.
Drag is mostly inconsequential.

The main problem is dealing with the enormous CG changes, the second stage would be like 5 times heavier than the booster at MECO (with 1/5 of the thrust behind it).
Most studies of this design put the second stage further up the side of the booster to help keep the CG far ahead of the thrust.

Going off of this wtf does rotation have to do with magnetic field strength? It’s even a factor in the Earth vs. Venus’ magnetic field. I get that you have to have charged particles in motion to generate a magnetic field but why wouldn’t the core of Earth or the core of a star be the same if it spins slowly or fast? Is this what makes magnetars so strong? What about black holes, is it the same mechanism? Isn’t everything past the event horizon fucking off and doing it’s own thing, why would rotation speed matter at that point?

Only four out of over 3,000 red dwarfs were suitable for the new observation methods, but the result is still significant. The flares on all four occurred above 55 degrees latitude, close to the poles. The chances of all four randomly being at such high altitudes is about one in a thousand. This means that this is likely a normal and common feature of red dwarfs.

This is an exciting finding, since many planets are being discovered around red dwarfs, including rocky ones in the habitable zone. The fact that these stars are so active may not be the death knell for some of those worlds as had been assumed. If life ever started on any of those planets, it may now have a much better chance of not only surviving, but flourishing.

Bottom line: Planets orbiting red dwarf stars could still be habitable despite superflares of intense radiation coming from the stars. It all has to do with the direction the flares are erupting in.

Just the tantalizing possibility of an Earth-like world orbiting a sun-like star/s just 4 light years away is enough to make me giddy. And even if we don't get any Earth analogs maybe some cool planets/moons all under a sun-like sky for those that have atmospheres, but exploring Proxima Centauri would be cool too.

We actually could make VS now. That recent long duration hotfire of a very small aerospike seals the deal, since aerospikes get much more thermally reasonable as you scale them up, along with the much better carbon fiber and insulation tech we have now. I'm not sure it's worth it ot make it now but it's interesting to think it could be done.

Spacelab expands it a lot but I can't remember if the Shuttle could dock to ISS with Spacelab or not

If not then Dream Chaser with its module will by far be the most pressurized volume to temporarily dock to the ISS which is cool

Yep! That's why I don't like the Dream Chaser hate. The Dragon, Cygnus, and Dream Chaser families offer unique but overlapping ranges of capability. We also know that Northrop will be using SpaceX to launch Cygnus based station modules starting in 2024.

Now what we REALLY need is a Dream Chaser XL with integral methalox aerospikes as a fully reusable second stage for Vulcan. Then if you add SMART reuse all you're expending is first stage tanks and SRBs.

Ultimately I think most interplanetary communications will be custom batch/store-and-forward protocols aside from telemetry streams similar to today. Laser links can apparently provide Tbps scale throughput, so you'd see file sharing and email as the predominant models. Granted things open up a LOT more once you're floating around in space. Imagine you are in a 2x2x2 and a 2x2x4 meter room on Earth. There is no real difference in terms of usable space aside from the illusion of being less claustrophobic because of a little more height. But once you are floating around, EVERY square inch of pressurized volume suddenly opens up. That's why the apollo capsule looked cramped as hell but once they were floating it looked way more roomy

I'm arguing both sides, you gave me two (you)s lol. Yeah it does look comfy. Propulsive landing crafts really makes spaceplanes obsolete but they are still pretty kino in theory. It would be cool to go with the starship design philosophy and make a really cheap but robust space plane with an internal tank and huge pressurized volume. 304L steel, common heat shield tiles, basically make them as fast and as cheap as possible. Oh and the ability to refuel at [DELETED] so you can do a lot more with them. I guess I am basically describing a crewed Energia II

The shuttle names were pretty kino. Enterprise was great considering star trek was yet to be pozzed at that time. Colombia, Challenger, Atlantis, Discovery, Endeavour (Bri ish spelling) all wonderful research vessels.
