Can someone explain dimensions to me? They're like, a measure of how far an object extends into a certain direction, right? And higher/extra dimensions are just directions we wouldn't know where to point to?

Just a minimum amount of basis vectors needed to represent a point in the vector space. It is basically the cardinality of the basis, if we are speaking in terms of vector spaces and not in general terms such as manifolds, hilbert, hausdorff spaces and such.

I assume you haven't had exposure to linear algebra so I would recommend trying to go through the book "Introduction to Linear Algebra" by Gilbert Strang. It is a good introductory text and doesn't assume any prior knowledge on the topic so it is a good start in my opinion. If you get stuck on some topic there is plenty of videos on youtube that will clarify the gaps you have. There is also the MIT lectures on youtube that basically use this book as a resource and it is done by the author himself so it is a credible source. There is also the series done by 3blue1brown which is very visual and builds your intuition very clearly.

Methink that's right.

Thee are a concept too. None of these dimensions exist in reality and yo can desrcibe the same in other ways (e.g. polar coordinates) too.
