Just finished my first year of physics, barely understood any of it, was pretty much carried by my study group.
Should I buckle down and study harder or should I just change majors?

How is it cheating? You still have to be the one to answer the questions at the final exam. It's not like you can just pass your courses with group projects where you let others do the work for you.

Everything up to QM (first 2.5 years at my school) was simply intuitive to me and I still feel like a relative brainlet, so I don't plan to become a physicist or go into academia. Fyi the only good way to do a study group is to teach the other people. Either get up to the whiteboard or use whiteboard software and teach them. You'll gain a better understanding and social standing which can help if you ever need help from one of them.

Change majors unless you love physics and are really good in math. A physics BS isn't that marketable compared to an engineering degree and there are plenty of engineering disciplines that don't require that much math. Systems engineering, industrial engineering and material science degrees don't dive into math like physics does.

I forget everything I learned in my bachelor still could bullshit through my master. As long as you can solve the homework and pass exams alone I think you should continue. But its pretty boring unless you work in a research group.

This happened to me but with history and the realization that I wanted to make a decent amount of money and live comfortably. So I switched to CIS, got into computer security and make around $210k a year working from my office at home. At the end of the day, choose whatever will make you happy.

It sounds like your problem is a lack of reading. Get a copy of University Physics with Modern Physics by Young and Freedman. Also get a copy of Mathematical Methods in Physics and Engineering by Riley, Hobson, and Bence.
Your best way forward is to consult textbooks on subjects that you don't understand.
I'd also suggest having a look at a Feynman lecture on a topic you find difficult: https://www.feynmanlectures.caltech.edu/
Some of the lectures are also on the necessary maths.

My advice: keep doing what you're doing.
I tried to do the opposite - study shit to truly understand the intuition behind the methods. It made me get worse grades than the midwits who basically grinded exercises and memorized patterns. And I didn't truly "get" the intuition behind the stuff as well. It only came to me years later when I briefly would look over the stuff, even though I wasn't even working in physics anymore.
There's a certain wisdom and mathematical maturity that only comes later after much experience. The feeling of discomfort at not knowing "why" that method of solving shit works is normal if you're not a midwit, but unfortunately I think that's something that you cannot avoid if you want to survive a proper (i.e. extremely difficult) physics degree.
Also, do keep in mind that a lot of the stuff that is used to tackle some specific types of exercises are shit that "just works" and the physicists mostly have no idea why it works, they don't give a fuck. You might find that rare professor that is extremely mathematically proficient and will explain to you exactly why some of these weird methods work for a specific type of subproblem, but don't count on it.
