Anyway, a wee bit of background information first. Its was just over a hundred years ago that no one knew the Universe was so huge. People thought the Milky way galaxy was the Universe. They had no idea the very faint smears of light that the telescopes of the times could see were actually other galaxies. They thought they were nebulae or distant clusters of stars within our Milky Way. With newer telescopes however our understanding of the Universe expanded considerably, and we knew it was much much bigger than previously thought. It would have been an exciting time to have lived through as an astronomer.
Okay, so I hope something similar happens with the JWT. It detects strange and previously unknown structures ( or things ) right at the edge of the Universe as we know it today. Or perhaps it detects anomalies within the known Universe that could only be accounted for by the influence of massive bodies lying beyond our detection. Something like that. However the JWT will not be able to gather enough information, it will simply not be powerful enough, so they will resolve to build even more powerful instruments to gather more precise and detailed information about these strange phenomena. These will make discoveries which will make the size of the Universe seem tiny by comparison. And so it goes. With each scientific era more and more stuff is discovered and the size and complexity of the Universe increases exponentially. I hope the JWT is the first to open this new era.
Anyway, that's what I would like to see happen.
