Dentist here - it's definitely on the border of being a science but is largely a trade that can be elevated to an art form. It's sort of on the border of several different things at once, but one thing it isn't is 100% objective.

To expand on this, "fixing cavities" is kind of like being a car mechanic but things like endodontics enters more into like doing microsurgeries through a microscope. Esthetic dentistry, including soft tissue recontouring, is more of an art form than anything.

Yeah if you don't trust your dentist you can get screwed over really badly, don't switch providers lightly and avoid nonwhites as they see their patients more as cash cows than human beings.

A good metric is that if they can't clearly explain to you why they logically believe a certain treatment is needed then you shouldn't be going to that person.

can any dentists tell me if it gets better

i graduated dental school last week and im just waiting for my licensure paperwork to clear to start working. i think dentistry is an interesting job but the back pain and patient management just make me wanna kill myself. how do i stay happy in this career

Male dentists hold the highest suicide rate at 8.02 percent (occupationally). Female dentists hold the fourth highest suicide rate at 5.28 percent.

i know, ive honestly worried about that statistic alot, as a male dentist. 8% is fucking huge, thats almost 1 in 10 commiting suicide. im worried for my future quality of life and happiness, despite the relatively high salary. how do i stop from being in that 8%

It's actually lower than the general population now because they have job security and make so much money. Mercury exposure probably contributed to the high suicide rate back in the day.

That being said, the suicide rate for dental students and recent graduates is pretty high.

I've heard that MDs and DOs have higher suicide rates due to shittier schedules, more time required in school, and difficulties with things like residency acceptance which dentists don't necessary have to deal with. I've found it to be a pretty challenging and rewarding job that allows me to make six figures working a 9 to 5.

This being said, I did use the military to pay for school, so no student loan debt.

Well composites are kind of like sculpting clay, so, sure I guess? You are working with your hands no matter if its an endodontic access or bisecting a tooth for extraction, so it technically qualifies as being artisanal.

It is, although it's become less so. Adhesive dentistry has somewhat eliminated some of the prosthodontic principles of tooth preparation like retention form and resistance form - as long as you have good enamel bonding it almost doesn't matter what the underlying preparation looks like (to a degree). CAD/CAM has largely eliminated the need for wax-ups. Surgical stents have greatly simplified implant surgery. All of this being said, it's still one of the more tactile jobs in medicine.

radiology is a joke specialty in dentistry and the only job you can get is working for dental schools. im single with no kids, but im 22 (went to dental school abroad so no undergrad)
