why do school insist on making everyone who isn't naturally inclined towards math hate it? Is there a way to combat this as I try to learn calculus? math is the biggest obstacle holding me back from pursuing a CS degree.

Yeah those classes should honestly be relocated to the engineering department. Real math classes are Real/Complex Analysis, Algebra, Topology, number theory, linear algebra (proof based), differential geometry, probability theory etc.

when I'm being taught I don't have any concept of what I'm learning could be applied to. Just memorizing gibberish and cramming as much of it into my head as possible in as little time as possible. There's maybe one applied question at the end of homework. Makes learning terribly boring and hard to grasp.

You really don't have a brain until your thirties. You look back on this stuff and it's simple.

Functions are input -> compute -> output
Trig functions like sine are about rotations, like a circle
Logarithm functions are about the hidden tolerances in numbers when they go from an absolute value to a natural number line.

Have you ever, idk, tried reading the book? If you read the book, visualise, know what the notations mean and know basic philosophy you’ll know what’s going on on at some level at least.

Dude, it is completely normal to not understand a thing.

It is like sports, you have to train it every day and suddenly it becomes easier.

If you don't understand a topic don't freak out and panic. Rather look it up on Wikipedia and try to understand it in Layman's terms first:
What is this? What can you do with this?

Then you look at the definitions and check each word you don't understand. You don't know very word definition by heart but you should have an idea what they mean. Often some small details can help you a lot.

If you can put the pieces together it is often simple. But it is like a house of cards: if you miss fundamentals, it gets very difficult to get higher.

Protip:
Talk to people. Often one dude understands one topic easily and fils to wrap his head around something else and vice versa.

Caveat: Sometimes there's no positive whole number that's the answer, but there are natural ways to extend the concept to other kinds of numbers.

if you're going to a big university you don't have to be good at math (or any subject) to graduate, just go on rate my professor and look for who the easy ones are for each course and register for their section on the first day of course registration. Luckily computer science degrees only require very common math courses (calc 1/2, linear algebra, discrete math, statistics) so there will likely be a ton of options for each. Be warned though that limited math knowledge will make some CS courses (especially graphics) much harder

The issue is that most layers of math build upon previous layers, if you fall behind understanding an early concept then you're forever playing catch up, everything becomes a random symbol or a magical black box since you lack a fundamental understanding.

math at college sucks. At highschool even if your teacher is a cunt it will still be easy as fuck since they're forced to go at the same pace as the most retarded kids in the room. At the college level the chink teaching it can just decide to turn the easiest topics imaginable into "memorize every theorem so you can write them in the five minute per question time limit you get on the exam." Intro to statistics was harder than 400 level math courses for me because of this bullshit
