Likewise we are running into heat dissipation problems as we pack more stuff into smaller spaces. That being said, silicon isn't the only game around, Optical computing is finally starting to make headway, and that could offer 100X speed up over silicon.
A good metric for this is crypto-mining. A successful miner has to run as fast as possible as cheaply as possible, so miner hardware is generally bleeding edge.
