The thing with this current wave of transgender people is that it wouldn't be possible without the general de-gendering of society.
You can't really pass as a woman with male sexual characteristics, if the major social role of women is childbirth, but that is increasingly less the case these days; society is becoming increasingly androgynous.
The irony of course is that in spite of this reality, mainstream transgender ideology re-enforces those increasingly superficial gender roles.
The future I suppose is for gender to simply become a vapid consumer choice, something decided on your clothes and your hairstyle and not a concrete social relation or sexual reality.
