Best you can do is become an expert in the subject yourself, but even then you will be somewhat biased/unknowledgeable because currently existing fields or research (even subfields of subfields of subfields) are so large and complex that there is no hope learning/knowing everything.
Long story short, dont worry about not being an expert, trust the experts and just enjoy the educational/mind broadening experience.
