I think what people mean when they call something 'original', is that the underlying combination of elements gives rise to qualities that are distinct from the source material, giving the final product its own distinct character. Could we run out of novel ideas? In some sense. I think nature has a finite number of recurring motifs, and if you were some hyper-intelligent entity, you could easily break down any given creation into them and see that it's just the same old thing in disguise, but we're not on that level; we can only see through so many levels of facade.
