in highschool i did this to myself. it was from unmedicated ADHD. fortunately my actual skill at producing high quality work kicked in last minute. i think my predicament was a little less dire, but if i had to guess, OP might have unmedicated ADHD.

It's probably a motivation issue stemming from untreated ADHD or depression. I have self-destructively used deadline anxiety as a motivator to disastrous results in the past before too; I'm sure a lot of intelligent people have.
