Why are we still spending money researching exercise and nutrition?

It's clear by now that even an ideal combination of diet and exercise will probably only add a few years to your life.
Why are we as a species still wasting time and money on this, instead of putting it towards finding ways to reverse the accumulated damage of aging?
For example, developing therapies to remove plaque from arteries, rather than dicking about trying to find the diet or exercise combo that most slows the rate of plaque progression?
