A person with no chess experience who has an above average IQ would on average do better than a below average IQ person with no chess experience. I would suspect that it is correlated with IQ but not strongly because a person can get good at this game by just studying strategy.

The most important skill is being able to visualise the board in your head so that you can calculate whether certain moves are good or not. I’ve been playing for 10 years and I still can’t accurately and effortlessly visualise the board in my head. This is a skill that is determined by genetics.

I think it's a matter of pattern recognition.
Most GMs and all super GMs were introduced to chess as a kid and learned the patterns over a very long time

Kasparov in his chess prime had an IQ in the 130s. Der Spiegel arranged a clinical test for him.
Lasker was probably the only chess champion with an IQ above 150, shown by his reign and more importantly his work in math.
