Given the known prevalence of homosexuality across most of human history, It appears that the trait is being naturally selected for. Is this true? If so, what biological/sociological purpose does it serve?

I'm not trying to antagonize gay people here. I'm legitimately curious and I can't find concrete answers anywhere
