So I've finished Electrical Engineering.
The problem is I can't find any jobs that I like. They all just sound boring as fuck.
I wanted a job in electronic design but 90% of the jobs I see advertised are power or consultancy. I don't even know what you do in these jobs. What does a power engineer even do all day?
I guess consultancy could do design work but it's such an ambiguous term I don't know what the fuck I'll be getting.
Anyone with experience in the EE work force have any tips?

I got a job after 4 months after graduating from my university in EE, and started 3 months ago. I essentially do industrial engineering at a depot for the DoD. The place is understaffed, so I'm writing repair procedures, writing testing procedures, changing designs parts, and explaining circuit diagrams to higher ups. It's not bad anon, but I guess you have to do a job to survive and change jobs for the future. I wanted to get into microfabrication and optics, but I'll probably have to get a master's to get into the field.

Yeah same, I did very well as a student, but basically just got told to eat shit when I applied for jobs.

Power consultancy looks profitable from what I've seen. I work in the electrical utility industry (technician). Those consultants help out with design issues, upgrades, troubleshooting design flaws etc. Looks like a decently low stress job ngl. Utility engineers are pretty varied, you either work in protection (programming relays) design, SCADA, or you become a glorified manager. At least from my perspective, any utility engies want to weigh in?

First off, there are hundreds of electronics companies out there. You aren’t looking wide enough or are using the wrong key words in your search.

Look outside your state, you not only have a global profession but are being picky about joining a somewhat niche discipline. Don’t expect to get your dream job 10 miles away from mommy and daddy’s house. Second of all, big boy jobs can take time to get. Up to a year if you are trying for a DoD/Government job. If you just started looking 2 weeks ago you already fucked up. You should’ve started 6 months ago.

Finally, you are a basic bitch undergrad EE and the subject matter you are trying to break into is normally staffed by PhDs or dudes with a Masters as a minimum. Any electronics design job you will get will be pretty low level, think designing thermostats or clocks or something.

College is the tutorial level for engineers, you aren’t even playing the real game yet but you want to go straight to the boss level.

When you are doing job searches make sure to look for Engineer I and look at the skillset they need you to use.
Since you are right out of college no one is going to give you any design work of any consequence. That's why companies have fellows and principle engineers.
What you need to do is pick a company that you think makes cool products and then show the engineers that you are willing to work hard to learn and grow.

Power industry is ok. Its not flashy, but it pays well and if you want to get into simulation there are groups like BPA, WAPA, Tennessee valley authority, tons of co-ops and PUDs, Minnesota power, ERCOT, power engineers ext ext
I like it mostly because working public owned power is rewarding in that you are directly helping your community.
Go o the website for NWPPA and USAJOBS. Hell, just go to your local county power headquarters and talk to them.
Look up L J Blackburn's textbooks.

And, if you want to stick on the electronics side of protection engineering, maybe look into ABB, SEL, or Siemens for their relaying design.

AC motors, you'll be working in some sort of industrial setting rebuilding forklift drivelines or managing power distribution inside a large refinery, hospital or communications hub (wired or wireless, RF or not there's a huge amount of AC theory involved as you can imagine). but now I'm thinking that it's better because they have more resources and more opportunity to move around and find what you like

I was told starting out to begin in a big company that can afford to throw training at you, and then go small if you want.
The power administrations below DOE have fantastic training programs.
Just be prepared to work with a bunch if electricians who make more than you while building your designs lol

In my university, undergrads have a complete electronic design class where we go from an idea of a device to schematics, simulations and finally altium PCB design. Is that not enough to gain understanding of the electronic engineering process? If that is tutorial mode, what class can actually prepare you for work?

The point is that it is much easier to be hired at a small company. If you geta job at a big company straight out of college then good for you. Its just unlikely because they get an enourmous amount of applicants while no one applies to grey electric LLC.

Are you saying that in order for me to get a job in the military later or because you think the world is going to collapse in the next 5 years?
Because if it's the former, jobs are dead here I'm going to try to look for a job elsewhere regardless of military, the only difference if I go is that I'll miss on a year of salaries and experience. If it's the latter you barely get any training.
