Related question has anyone gone to boca chica to physically witness a launch? Was thinking about crossing several state lines for the orbital flight, which is probably a bad idea if it aborts all week and wastes my time and money, but I want to know what to expect regardless and how close you could get to it.

When it comes close to a confirmed launch I would ask around on reddit. People will help you out. That being said finding a hotel even as far as brownsville might be hard if not impossible. I would plan on camping/sleeping in your car for habitation. Just try to ask the best spot for parking and viewing. I know a lot of people go to the beach across the floodplain from the launch site. Lots of kino footage comes from there but i’m not sure how to get there and stuff. Again just ask on reddit they will help you out

Why would they be allowed to leave Earth? It has far lower resource inputs per human than any potential space station or offworld colony and they're so well controlled here that you can mandate a mystery serum and they'll actually get mad at the other cattle for not taking it.

correct, although it's a photoshop of a real image
the nozzles are prettied up, but there were physical mock-ups in place for that shot
the spacesuited dummy was real, they stood him up for that shot
the actual rocket looked a LOT uglier, that's where a lot of the photoshop effort went
it was very visibly a patchwork of stainless steel foil over a battleship water tower
I'm not sure if the nosecone was real, it might have already blown over by that point

The stars themselves wouldn't be that interesting. All you could do was show boring spectral graphs and talk about "oh well it has like above average oxygen, I guess" complimented with generic footage from universe simulator or something. Oh, surprisingly I didn't realize that. I actually liked District 9. Mainly because of the amount of tropes it breaks that are usually found in alien movies. The found footage format is a little annoying at first but then you get used to it. The thing is that one has to accept the movie's premise regarding how this world works and make a good headcanon as to why the entire world military and scientific community isn't probing the fuck of that floating ship or getting involved since the moment the prawns descended from it. But apart from that, it's more about the execution and where to go from there.
A shame what Blomkamp did to Elysium though, perhaps that one was doomed from the start.

They are already working on the 921 moon rocket. The YF-100K main engines are being tested and are based on the existing YF-100 engines. The YF-75 upper stage engines are already in use. The 5m tank diameter is already in use. They tested a boilerplate version of their deep space crewed spacecraft in May 2020. They are also working on a manned lunar lander. The Chang'e 5 mission was a subscale test of a manned lunar landing. I think they could do it in less than 7 years if they really wanted to.

It’s certainly anything but actually sphere-shaped because the surrounding stars are all at different distances and have different masses. Alpha Centauri probably gets the advantage because it masses like twice as much as the Sun in total, but in another direction, like towards Groombridge, I’d bet the Sun’s sphere of influence extends much further.

Thats only 3% of 1% of speed of light, and it was done using lot of orbital trickery with a small probe. 1% speed of light is very extremely mega generous with a fusion drive. So a "hard scifi" with that kind of a drive would not only be atleast 400+ years away, but thats 400+ years in travel. So realistically any such civilization spanning multiple solar systems would require 1000+ years in making, and "hard scifi" would be hard.

What I did was go out at night with binoculars and actually observe specific nearby stars. Seeing them with your own eyes, knowing their names, and contemplating that these are the stars which will be the first homes to mankind beyond the Sun is a great experience.

Personally, I use the constellation system devised by 20th Century author and illustrator H. A. Rey. Some of them look retarded but they are easy to remember and see in the sky. I wonder if it would actually be cheaper to make an expendable booster out of steel. You'd have to make it bigger and give it more thrust to compensate for the added weight, so that might eat up all of the savings.

JWST isn't really going to find many planets itself. Most of the interest is in using it to follow-up known transiting exoplanets, to do spectroscopy of their atmospheres. This has been done from the ground and with HST, but the wavelength range is very limited. JWST has a lot of potential in this area, but it will be in extreme demand. JWST will probably only characterise a few dozen planets, whereas ARIEL is dedicated to the task and will be able to study many more planets (~1000).
JWST is also limited because the instruments were not designed for this. For the brightest host stars JWST's instruments will saturate in even the shortest possible exposures. These may be some of the best systems to study. Only ARIEL will study these. Many of the targets for the survey will come from ESA's Plato mission, which is optimised to find transiting Earth like planets around fairly bright stars (unlike TESS and Kepler).

IIRC it's necessary for a direct GEO mission. The RD-180 gets it almost to orbital velocity so Centaur has enough delta-V to not just release into GTO but do the final circularization burn at the end.

The design calls for at least 10.5 years of fuel (10 years operations after 6 months of commissioning). But it depends how accurate the injection is from the launch vehicle. The better the launch the less fuel needed for corrections, the longer the life. It is a good thing it's on Ariane.

10 years is a long time in space astronomy. Spitzer's cryogen lasted 5 years, Herschel operated for 4 years. Both missions had huge impact and left and enormous scientific legacy. Herschel died 8 years ago but even now more papers are published based on Herschel data every year than SOFIA in total over a decade. SOFIA is still active now. Being long-lived is not the same as being scientifically productive.
