The models for gravity are very accurate and useful but when scientists apply the same models to the rotation of galaxies the models are inaccurate to describe what actually happens. In order for the model to be correct the galaxy would need to have MORE material inside of it than is visible. And also when galaxies collide with each other they behave as if there is MORE material in them than is visible. This is considered "dark matter" because there's not much evidence it exists besides these odd scenarios involving gravity. Scientists don't try to force anybody into thinking it's real, they are currently just trying to prove it exists. They aren't going to immediately reject their models of gravity that they already know work under most circumstances because that would be stupid.
