There is a ton of great music that exists across a variety of genres, but it all either classical+jazz
+folk music, or if we're talking about contemporary commercial "pop" music (again, speaking very broadly), most of the good stuff is basically either by a few classic rock/prog rock bands, or obscure punk/metal/indie artists. There is also some decent electronic music and rap, but that is even harder to find than good rock music (I'm mainly thinking about shit like Throbbing Gristle).
But yeah, jpop is terrible. I would classify most of it on the same level as shit like Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Linkin Park, Blink 182, dubstep, etc.
