You should see the tests that the scientists do on humans or macaques. That's much worse than the rat tests. Look up MKUltra or the many times US military tested out biological weapons on unwitting American citizens before using it on enemies.

This isnt the actual problem with scientists.
The problem is that people with high iq are fucking lazy. Science would be much nicer if we just put all people with IQ 120+ into camps and forced them to study really hard and do science and extract semen from them.

Rats are just rats. I did some experiments with them that involved connecting their brain with a chip. The idea is to teach rats to regocnize numbers with the help of a computer. Later perhaps I want to add a module to make them able to calculate numbers.
The only thing that sucks is lab rats are super expensive.
Trying out on humans would be cheaper. Rats cost multiple thousands of dollars per each, fuck that.

there are way way more regulations now than the 50s. one weird thing is that all these laws are for vertebrates only. in the EU there is only regulations for vertebrates and cephalopods (i.e. squids, octopus, etc)

Lab rats aren't sewer rats and are bred and genetically controlled. That being said they aren't that expensive, a cheap lab rat might be 20 bucks while the expensive ones go for 200+, though more expensive custom or mutant variants might be much more than that. Of course you still need to ship live animals so that's going to add bunch on top.

yes and no. for starters we are also mammals and mammals have the most advanced nerve systems meaning they are "more aware" and "suffer more", i think that's why "big brain" (it's actually their gut) octopuses are also regulated but shrimp and flies aren't.
i mean some invertebrates can literally be cut in half and grow into two individuals and they do have less advanced nociception (but not none).
it's hard to say because even simple protists have some form of nociception. if you say that nociception is just a survival mechanism then that also applies to humans

How did they reach the conclusion that the rats thought they would be rescued? Wouldn't it be more likely they were in a new situation and their brain entered survival mode, 0 thought into actions just survive, then the reprive allowed them to process events and formulate a more measured swimming response? Sort of like how taking a break improves efficiency at a new task
