The average person doesn't give a shit about whatever controversies exist in robotics/biology/mathematics/physics, because they don't know anything about the subject and don't want to take the time to learn. So they go along with the mainstream opinions, whatever those might be, because the people who are espousing those positions have researched the field more than they ever will. Politics has a much larger effect on our daily lives, so the average normie is slightly more informed, but the general principle still holds.
