What is the evolutionary advantage of being long? I can see in certain animals it has to do with the way they fly or swim, or living in something long like an intestine. But what do

>centipedes
>millipedes
>snakes (non constricting, non tree dwelling)
actually get out of their longness? Why have they never evolved shortness as an energy saving measure?
