I don't know; maybe you could figure that the creature was adapted for fast running based on its apparent defenselessness and the features of the skeleton; running when it's warm would generate a lot of heat, so it needs heat regulation, and long ears are one mechanism for that... but that's not something that would never occur to anyone if it wasn't for living examples with such ears, so they probably extrapolate a based existing animals, too.
