I remember reading an interview with Jim Simons where he said when he worked for the IDA, he would spend about half his working time on their projects and gave them enough results to justify his fat paycheck, then the other half of his working time he focused on his own maths just for intellectual hedonism. He made a lot of strides in manifold theory while getting paid well for basic military research.
